Review of Fishing Float Tubes

Review of Fishing Float Tubes

What To Look For

Shape is the first thing to consider before buying a fishing float tube. Your four choices include round, a V or U shape, the pontoon and the cat. Round tubes are the least expensive but also least adaptable. They are usually only suitable for placid waters. The V and U shaped tubes have an open end for easy entry and exit and also seat you higher for a better vantage point. Pontoons position you higher still, and keep you fully out of the water. They feature two long, parallel inflated tubes with a seating area connecting them in the center. Pontoons are more cumbersome to maneuver outside the water but are a breeze once afloat. The cat is similar to the pontoon but often features an A shape with an open end. Unlike the V or U shape, cats can have you seated fully out of the water. Some tubes have an array of extra features, such as side pockets and other storage areas, drink holders, inflatable or reclining seats and an attached anchor. Whatever shape you choose, make sure it is constructed of lightweight and durable materials.

Common Pitfalls

The larger and more advanced float tubes are going to take more skill to launch than a smaller round, V or U shape tube. Some of the smaller tubes can be worn like a backpack until you get out into the area in which you wish to fish, whereas the pontoon styles are better off launched in the water from the start.

Small areas of consideration are the durability of the attachments, such as float tube stoppers that may pop off or aprons that come loose. Make sure storage areas are fully dry before storing things there that should not get wet. One more thing to consider is the float tube's bladder material. Vinyl is a common material but it is not as durable against punctures as one constructed of polyurethane.

Where To Buy

As implied by the name, the Float Tube Store is an ideal choice for buying a float tube. Float tubes are also available at stores that sell sporting goods, camping equipment and outdoor gear. Places to try include Cabela's, Sierra Trading Post and BigSkyFishing.com.

Cost

Round fishing float tubes are the least expensive, some starting below $100 and going up from there. Pontoon styles are the most expensive, ranging from about $500 to $1,000 and up. Those shaped in a V, U or cat style fall in the middle, with prices starting around $150 and reaching well over $500, depending on features.
