Fishing Vest Review

Fishing Vest Review

What To Look For

A quality fishing vest should offer a number of functional features. One of the most important is number and location of pockets. Vests should be able to hold anything you need right at hand with pockets that are easy to access. Some offer fewer larger pockets, while others offer a number of smaller ones. Either way, pockets should be situated horizontally so contents don't get knocked around and have some type of closure. Some vests offer a built-in rod holder to keep you hands-free. Staying cool and comfortable is another factor, so look for vests that are lightweight and include mesh panels for breathability. Some also offer padded shoulders or neck area for added comfort. All should have a front zipper or other closure. Some vests are inflatable so they can double as a life jacket, while others are made of fabrics that help block harmful UV rays.

Common Pitfalls

Getting a vest that doesn't fit right is a major faux pas. You don't want a vest that is so bulky it gets in the way, but you also don't want one that's so snug that it's restricting. The ideal fishing vest should fit properly both over a T-shirt and a jacket for different weather. Women's fishing vests offer a more tapered fit. Some vests have adjustable straps to best fit whatever you are wearing beneath it. Also make sure the vest is machine washable so it can be easily cleaned. Zipper pockets are great but not as easily accessed as Velcro or flap closures. Look for a variety of pockets to best suit your needs. Don't forget inside pockets for things you need to keep safe and dry.

Where To Buy

Sporting goods and camping supply stores are good bets. Some options include Bass Pro Shops, Sierra Trading Post, Sports Authority, Cabela's and FrontRangeAnglers.com. You can also buy vests through a comparison shopping site, such as Buy.com or Amazon.com, which often offer a large variety from different retailers.

Cost

Basic fishing vests can start as low as $30 with more advanced models costing $100 or more. The pricier vests are often a better quality that will stand up better to wear and tear. Comparison sites are good for finding a vest you like at the best price, especially when it comes to quickly locating a sale.
