Garmin Vs. Magellan Handheld GPS

Garmin Vs. Magellan Handheld GPS
Garmin and Magellan are two leading hand-held GPS manufacturers. While their basic functions are very similar, they differ in the kinds of features they offer. Which GPS unit you decide to go with will depend on how you intend to use it.

Waterproof Rating

Most hand-held Garmin and Magellan GPS units have an IPX7 waterproof rating, making them water resistant for up to 30 minutes in 1 meter of water. But Magellan's battery compartments are also waterproof, making them much more likely to float than Garmin models.

Maps

Garmin GPS units have more detailed basic maps than Magellan, with the ability to add even better maps with features such as local points of interest. But most basic Garmin models only have a serial port, meaning that uploading maps from your computer can take a long time.

Compass and Altimeter

Only the very high-end model Garmin models such as the Oregon 300 feature an electronic compass and altimeter. Conversely, most Magellan models come with an electronic compass and a barometric altimeter.

Paperless Geocaching

Both high-end model Magellan and Garmin hand-helds have a paperless geocaching function so you can download cache coordinates from your computer. But Magellan doesn't have a way to mark a cache as "found," which is confusing if you are doing several caches that day.

Extra Features

Magellan has a lot of extra features on its GPS such as digital cameras, voice recorders and flashlights.
