Iberia Airline Baggage Requirements

When packing for a trip, it's important to know what the baggage allowances and restrictions are. The last thing you want is to be held up at the airport, or worse yet, to be forced to discard items that do not meet the airline's requirements.

Baggage Allowance in Hold: Weight System

For flights on Iberia to destinations within Europe, Israel and Chile, the weight system is used. Each passenger is allowed a certain amount of weight in the baggage hold. Business-class passengers can bring up to 30 kilograms (66 pounds), while economy-class passengers can bring up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds) free of charge. All luggage items must not exceed 158 centimeters, or 62 inches, when you add the length, width and height.

Baggage Allowance in Hold: Piece System

For journeys to the Americas (except Chile), Africa and the Middle East, the piece system is used. Each passenger is allowed a certain number of pieces. Business-class passengers are allowed three pieces of 23 kilograms (50 pounds) each, while economy-class passengers are allowed two pieces of 23 kilograms (50 pounds) each. Luggage items are not to exceed 158 centers (62 inches) when you add the length, width and height. This means a business passenger can bring a total of 69 kilograms (152 pounds), while an economy passenger can bring up to 46 kilograms (101 pounds).

Excess Baggage and Special Items

If you have baggage that exceeds the free-weight allowance, you must pay for excess baggage. A surcharge can be paid for excess baggage up to 32 kilograms (70 pounds) in weight. Any piece of luggage weighing between 32 and 45 kilograms (70-99 pounds) is considered special baggage. If you need to send sporting equipment of other items that qualify as special baggage due to size or weight restrictions, call the airline to get an estimate on the excess baggage fee. At most airports, you can pay for excess baggage when you check in.

Hand Baggage Allowance

On both long- and short-haul flights, economy passengers are allowed one carry-on luggage of 10 kilograms (22 pounds). Business passengers are allowed 14 kilograms (30 pounds) on short-haul flights and 18 kilograms (39 pounds) on long-haul flights. All passengers must obey the size restrictions of 115 centimeters (45 inches) when you calculate length, width and height of the carry-on item. In addition to your hand luggage you may also bring one small purse or briefcase, a coat, crutches, an umbrella, a camera or binoculars, a laptop and a small nursery bag.

Hand Baggage Restrictions

There are many items that are not allowed in hand baggage. Some airports have strict rules regarding liquids. Usually all liquids must be in 100-milliliter (3.3-ounce) containers and sealed in one large plastic ziplock bag. Aerosols, compressed gases, oxygen tanks and equipment with fuel are not allowed. You cannot bring matches or some items in a typical first-aid kit. These items must be placed in the baggage hold with your checked baggage. Avalanche rescue packs are allowed in carry-on baggage.
