Sandy Beaches

Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park, a place where the mountains meet the sea, is one of America's most visited national parks. The park is located near Bar Harbor, a popular resort town.
Urban Maine
Portland is the largest city in Maine. With a lively arts district, a minor league hockey team and an active waterfront, this city draws many visitors from all over the country. Other urban areas in the state would include Bangor, Lewiston-Auburn and Augusta, the state capital.
Mount Katahdin
The highest point in the state is Mount Katahdin (elevation 5,268 feet), located about 100 miles northwest of Bangor. The solitary mountain is the centerpiece of Baxter State Park, one of the premier wilderness parks in the country.
Evans Notch
The White Mountain National Forest stretches into Maine (from nearby New Hampshire) to include the Evans Notch region of Maine. This area of rugged mountains, pristine forest and whitewater rivers is less crowded than the Mount Washington section of the park.
Passamaquoddy Bay
Passamaquoddy Bay, located near Eastport at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy, has the largest tidal whirlpool in the western hemisphere. The whirlpool is called Old Sow, is 250 feet across and can be successfully crossed in a motorboat.
