London is a great jumping-off point for visiting the rest of the United Kingdom or catching transport to mainland Europe. Whether you want to take a biking tour through the city or simply head north to the rolling hills of Scotland, London is the gateway for all the United Kingdom has to offer.

Air Travel from the United States

From North America, most airlines fly directly to Heathrow Airport. American, Continental, Delta and United have direct flights from New York to London. Delta also runs flights to London from Atlanta, Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. US Airways has London flights from Orlando, Denver and Philadelphia. London is a popular destination, so it's worth looking around and comparing fares to get the best price.

Airports in London

Five airports serve the sprawling metropolis of London. London's main airport, and one of the busiest in the world, is Heathrow Airport. The majority of flights arriving from outside Europe arrive at Heathrow. Other airports serving London include Luton Airport, Stansted Airport, Gatwick Airport and London City Airport. Luton, Stansted and Gatwick are popular with low-cost airlines.

Travel Between London's Airports

If you need to travel between airports, give yourself ample time. London's airports, especially Heathrow, are known for strict security measures. If arriving from outside the United Kingdom, you will need enough time to pass through immigration and customs, travel to your next airport and go through security and all other formalities again. National Express has an airport transfer bus that does the rounds between the city's airports.

Onward Travel in the United Kingdom

From London, there are many options to get away from the hubbub and on to your next destination. London's main coach station is Victoria Station, although National Express bus service has many buses direct from the city's airports. You can also travel by train with National Rail or catch the Eurostar to the mainland. If you're traveling with a lot of luggage or equipment, be sure to check with the bus or rail company about luggage allowances.

Onward Travel to Mainland Europe

Often, the cheapest option is to fly between cities in Europe. Check out U.K.-based discount airlines Easy Jet and RyanAir for current rates and schedules. Keep in mind that airlines within Europe generally have lower luggage weight allowances than airlines in North America; you don't want to get stuck shelling out the pounds in order to bring all of your gear with you.
