Boston Tourist Information

Boston Tourist Information
Boston is a great attraction for tourists for several reasons. It has a congenial climate that is not too hot during the summer, delightful during the fall and spring and a little bit wintry during the months of December, January and February. Furthermore, the city is filled with a fascinating Revolutionary War history and a rich literary history as well. Beantown, as it is also called, has a wonderful physical setting with the Charles River as a northern border and the Boston Harbor on Boston Bay, forming the eastern edge of the city. Here are a few vital facts for tourists.

Boston Harbor Islands

Boston has 34 harbor islands, which are all part of Boston Harbor Island National Recreation Area. These islands are a great place for boating, hiking, wading swimming or even camping, which is allowed in a few places. Two of the islands have ferry service from the Boston waterfront at Long Wharf North at Christopher Columbus Park; it runs from early May until Columbus Day. There is also a Civil War fort and a lighthouse to interest visitors. This is a unique city experience that should not be missed.

The Freedom Trail

Walk the Freedom Trail and learn all about Boston's rich Revolutionary history, which includes the ride of Paul Revere, the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Boston Tea Party. There is also along the trail, on Boston's North Side, a delightful Italian neighborhood that offers a wide choice of restaurants and cafes, where you can take a break from the walk.

Explore the Charles River

This slow-moving, meandering river separates Boston from Cambridge, but there is no reason that you can't explore both sides of the river. Walk or bike along the riverside path and enjoy the view of all the sailboats and racing skiffs that use the river during warm weather.

Climb Beacon Hill

This hill is a good, hearty climb through an upscale, residential neighborhood. Follow the marked path through the narrow streets until you get to the top. Several historical buildings mark this short walk. If you begin in the vicinity of Massachusetts General Hospital, the hike will take you over Beacon Hill and down to Boston Commons, a large, grassy park in downtown Boston.

Excellent Public Transportation

The intricate web of buses, subway and commuter trains will get around the city quickly, safely and with ease. Buses cost $1.50, and the subway will set you back $2 for a ride, but you can buy an all-day (24-hour) pass for $9, which will take you all over the city. The commuter trains run from either North Station or South Station to the outlying suburbs and small towns such as Plymouth and Gloucester. They are priced separately.
