Mountain Destination Weddings

Susan J. Berg

Mountains can provide a spectacular backdrop to your wedding. Popular mountain destination wedding locations in the United States include the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada, the Appalachian Mountains and the Grand Teton regions. If you're looking for something even more dramatic, consider planning a destination wedding to the mountains of Europe.

Rocky Mountains Region

The Rocky Mountains region of Colorado offers a wide range of options. Ski lovers should look into getting married at one of the state's many ski resorts. These locations are also an excellent option outside the winter season, when the scenery is still gorgeous but the prices are a bit lower. Hikers and nature lovers should look into locations close to Rocky Mountain National Park, such as Estes Park, located just outside the park's boundaries.

Sierra Nevada Region

The granite walls and cascading waterfalls of Yosemite National Park offer a dramatic background for a mountain destination wedding in California. You can opt to get married outside in the valley, in the Yosemite Valley Chapel, or at the Ahwahnee Hotel. Locations to consider outside the park include the Tenaya Lodge in Fish Camp or Bass Lake in Oakhurst.

Appalachian Mountains Region

The Smoky Mountains offer an idyllic backdrop for a country wedding. Stay away from the garish wedding chapels in Gatlinburg and head to Great Smoky Mountains National Park to find the perfect natural site for your wedding.

Grand Teton Region

The Jackson Hole area is another popular location for those seeking a mountain destination wedding. Jackson, located at the base of the Grand Teton mountain range, features a number of resorts and other facilities perfect for hosting a mountain-inspired wedding.

International Options

If you are looking for something a bit more extravagant, consider a mountain destination in Europe. Locations to consider include sites in the Swiss Alps, such as Lauterbrunnen or Interlaken, or sites in the Italian Dolomite mountains, such as Cortina or Merano.
