Equipment
Put anything that can be construed as a weapon, from Swiss Army knives to tent stakes, into your checked luggage. Otherwise, security will take it away before you board.
Prohibitions
Fuel canisters, aerosols, and torches are prohibited from luggage and carry-ons. However, one pack of strike-anywhere matches is allowed in your carry-on.
Batteries
Always keep batteries and devices with you or in your carry-on. If a fire does happen, aircraft crew can access them.
Electronics
Once the plane pushes off from the gate, do not use any devices that transmit or receive signals, such as GPS units or cell phones because they can interfere with aircraft communications.
Passports
If you qualify for dual citizenship, get a passport from the second country for use when flying abroad. Depending on whichever is advantageous in a security situation, show either the American or foreign passport.
