Italy is one of the most popular travel destinations in Europe, with Rome and Venice appearing on almost every itinerary. Travel options between these two cities are plentiful and include train service, rental cars, airline travel or boat.

Geography

Rome is located on the southwest coast of Italy and Venice is situated on the Adriatic Sea, about 400 miles away on the northeast coast.

Best Mode of Travel

The best and most popular method of traveling between Rome and Venice is the intercity train service offered by RailEurope and ItaliaRail. Most trains will allow you to store a bicycle during your trip but may charge an extra baggage fee.

Alternatives

Traveling between Rome and Venice by car takes about six hours. Utilizing a combination of hiking and ferry service, the same trip could be accomplished in three to five days, depending on your speed.
