Early History
The Marina Hotel and Casino opened in 1975 at the MGM Grand site.
Purchasing
In 1989, Kirk Kerkorian bought The Marina Hotel and changed the name to the MGM Marina.
Rebuilding
After deciding that the hotel was functional and beautifully designed, Kerkorian decided to build onto the hotel instead of starting from scratch. From November 1990 to December 1993, the hotel was closed for business and underwent $1 billion in additions and renovations.
Reopening
On Dec. 18, 1993, the MGM Grand opened as the largest hotel in the United States. The hotel had more than 5,000 guest rooms, eight restaurants, five lounges and 171,500 square feet of casino space.
MGM Grand Today
In addition to the typical Vegas hotel amenities and luxuries, the MGM Grand contains a state of the art fitness center equipped with steam rooms, saunas, and weight and cardiovascular equipment. The MGM Grand is also home to one of the most elaborate swim complexes on the Las Vegas Strip.
