What Are the Documents Needed to Travel to Canada?
The documentation needed for travel between the United States and Canada depends on the method of transportation and the age of the traveler. Travelers should stay informed with current passport and identification regulations before traveling between the U.S. and Canada.

Traveling by Air

Passengers of all ages traveling by air are required to have a valid passport. The passport must be a passport book, and passport cards will not be accepted.

Traveling by Land and Sea

Adult travelers traveling between the United States and Canada by land and sea are required to present a passport book, passport card or other Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative compliant document.

Children

Children traveling by land and sea may submit a valid birth certificate as a proof of identification and citizenship. However, when traveling by air, a valid passport is required.

Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) is the law set forth as an antiterrorism act. The WHTI helps the United States, Canada and Mexico keep track of who is entering and exiting borders.

WHTI Approved Documents

WHTI compliant documents (that are used for land and sea travel) include enhanced driver's licenses, NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST cards, and approved military, merchant mariners and Native American Cards.
