Digital Image Sensor
Like other digital cameras, DSLRs use digital image sensors to capture the image coming through the lens. Some DSLRs have full-size sensors, while others are designed with smaller sensors that magnify the lens images.
Multiple Interchangeable Lenses
The main advantage of DSLRs over most digital cameras is the adaptability. Because the camera body can fit many different lenses, it is possible to change your shooting method based on conditions and the image you are trying to capture. This is analogous to having a toolbox instead of just a hammer.
High-Definition DSLRs
Some modern DSLRs feature movie modes that work much like digital movie recorders. Some of these cameras feature high-definition shooting ability (1080p).
Considerations
Though a DSLR features many benefits, the downside is the size and weight. To carry the camera body, lenses and other accessories that make a DSLR so functional, you have to carry a full camera bag. These can be heavy and need to be protected from the elements. That is why most travelers prefer the size and convenience of the point-and-shoot cameras.
Brands
The most popular brands in the DSLR market are Canon and Nikon. These brands feature multiple DSLR systems that cater to amateur and professional photographers. Though Canon and Nikon make their own lenses, many independent lens makers such as Sigma, Vivitar, and Tamron also make lenses compatible with these Canon and Nikon.
