Compact Flash
Compact Flash (CF) cards, physically the largest of the popular memory cards, are used almost exclusively in digital single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras, where small size is not an issue. CF cards are the most common type, after Secure Digital (SD) cards.
Secure Digital & Secure Digital High Capacity
SD cards are the most common memory cards for cameras and are used in the majority of point-and-shoots, as well as a fail-safe to some SLRs main CF card. The Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) card is identical in all aspects to the SD card, except for a larger storage capacity; note that cameras compatible with SDHC may also use SD, but the reverse is not true.
XD Picture Card
These tiny, thumbnail-sized cards, designed jointly by Fuji and Olympus, are used exclusively in these two manufacturer's cameras.
Memory Stick Series
Sony is the creator and sole user of this family of about six Memory Stick variants.
Other Types of Cards
While other types of memory cards are used in digital cameras, the vast majority of manufacturers and models are covered by the types listed above.
