Fly fishing offers a carefree approach to attracting rainbow trout. Unlike a line that is cast and pulled, the fly fishing rod settles in the water and, when baited, appears more natural to fish, especially rainbow trout who scare easily.
Dry Fly
Dry flies may include streamers and bait that resemble insects and bugs that sit on top of the water. Live insects such as grasshoppers and beetles can be used, but simulated bait also will suffice.
Wet Fly
A wet fly is a type of bait used in fly fishing that sinks into the water. This type of lure also needs to travel under the water. Some examples include a casting or trolling spoon with an attached hook.
Live Bait
Rainbow trout love live bait. Examples of live bait include minnows, nymphs, grubs and earthworms.
Jigs
Jigs often are used for deep areas of water that may carry obstructions such as rocks or beaver dams. The body of the jig often has colorful feathers attached to a plastic core; some also replicate small minnows.
Spinners
Trout spinners are used particularly in slightly rough waters and spring-fed streams. The spinners match the flash that often is created by rapid water or waves, so they become appealing and are more visible to the rainbow trout.
