Animals in Grassland Biome

Animals in Grassland Biome
Grasslands, areas where there is little shrub or tree vegetation and a dominance of grasses, vary considerably in vegetation and in fauna. These changes in flora and fauna patterns are largely due to differences in biotic and abiotic factors such as precipitation, fire, grazing, and soil structure. The suitability of grasslands to grazing and farming has led much of the world's grasslands to be converted to agriculture.

North american prairie animals

The prairies of the United States are divided into three classes according to grass height. These changes in grass height are due to changes in precipitation as the prairie stretches from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. The American bison, prairie dog, pronghorn antelope, pocket gopher, jackrabbits, and black-footed ferret are some of the animals endemic to these grasslands.

African savanna animals

The savannas of East Africa harbor the largest diversity of hoofed mammals anywhere in the world. Many species of antelope reside here as do other herbivores, including giraffes, elephants, zebras, rhinos, and wildebeest. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, jackals, and hyenas are among the predators found on the savanna.

South american pampas animals

The subtropical climate and regular rainfall has created a variety of habitats within the Pampas. Wetland areas exist alongside the grasslands which are dominated by Pampas grass. Fire is a significant factor in the prairie. Among the animals found here are capybaras, marsh deer, caimans (relatives of the alligator), giant otters, armadillos, viscachas (member of the chinchilla family), hares, foxes, partridges, rheas, and the greater rhea.

Australian grassland animals

The climate of the Australian grasslands is generally semi-arid and hot. A large variety of reptiles including some highly venomous snakes have adapted to this region. Marsupials, represented by kangaroos and wallabies, are the dominant herbivores. The Australian grasslands have been occupied by a significant number of feral and exotic species such as the dingo, rabbits, cattle, and pigs.

Tibetan steppe animals

The highest grasslands in the world and source of a number of major rivers including the Indus, Yellow, and Yangtze, the Tibetan Steppe is ecologically rich in spite of its semi-arid and cold climate. Animals endemic to this pristine grassland include the wild ass, yak, several species of deer, antelope, gazelle, takin, wild sheep, brown bear, wolf, snow leopard, lynx, fox, marmot, and pika.
