Packing for a trip includes the tricky task of fitting your daily beauty supplies into your luggage. Hair dryers present a particularly difficult problem: Large ones may be bulky and cumbersome, while small units can be ineffective. The important traits that identify a good travel hair dryer are size, drying ability and options.

Size

Two features are relevant to this category: weight and bulk. Travel hair dryers should be compact, with a smaller handle and head than a full-sized model. A folding handle or retractable cord are a plus. The hair dryer should be light, adding no more than two pounds to your luggage.

Power and Options

A common complaint of travel hair dryers is that they don't provide the same experience. Look for a model that has a high wattage output with the speed and cooling features that you prefer. Both models preferred on the Consumer Search website are 1875-watt hair dryers with variable speed and heat settings.

Plugs

If you are traveling out of the country, select a hair dryer that comes with adapter plugs to conform to the different outlet designs in foreign countries.
