Asheville, North Carolina is known for its beautiful mountains and hiking trails. For those looking to meet others interested in hiking, there are several hiking clubs in the Asheville area.

Carolina Mountain Club

Advertising itself as the, “oldest hiking and trail maintenance club in western North Carolina,” the Carolina Mountain Club offers half-day and full-day hikes on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays. An individual membership to the club is $20 a year as of 2010, and those wishing to join must complete an application form.

Sierra Club of Western North Carolina

Part of the larger Sierra Club organization, the Sierra Club of Western North Carolina also offers day hikes for its members. It also is active politically in conservation efforts in the area. Meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of the month at the Unitarian Church in Asheville.

The Asheville Hiking Meetup Group

This online group has one or two hikes on weekends, with one meeting day during the week to plan. The group is open to all ages and ability levels, as well as to hikers who have dogs.

Western North Carolina AT Section Hikers Meetup Group

Another group based on the Meetup website, the WNC AT Section Hikers are focused on hiking the Appalachian Trail. Group members meet to plan and hike sections of the Appalachian Trail or through-hike the entire Appalachian Trail.

Pisgah Hikers

Located in Brevard, North Carolina, the Pisgah Hikers offer hikes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Hikes are grouped by difficulty, with Fridays offering the easiest hikes, Mondays more moderate and Wednesdays the hardest hikes. There is a $2 annual membership fee as of 2010.
