Ancient Nomads
Ancient users of canteen water holders were usually nomadic, as they traveled to find food. Ancient people would often cure animal bladders to make them strong enough to hold water to take on journeys.
Shepherds
Shepherds used canteens that were made from hollowed out gourds with corks to seal the tops. These gourd canteens could be carried for long distances while the shepherds searched for food and water for their flocks.
Cowboys
Cowboys riding through the wild west sewed leather bags to make canteens. These leather canteens were often quite large, and could be strapped across horses to carry a good amount of water for several days.
Military
The word canteen is used often to describe military-issued canteens, which have been used for centuries. Some of the earliest ones were wooden and circular with leather straps. Others were made of tin.
Outdoor Enthusiasts
As time went on, people started carrying canteens while they were outside simply to enjoy nature. Modern canteens have progressed a long way since their predecessors. Now they are commonly made from plastic or aluminum, and have straws or straps attached. They are made of sturdy, lightweight materials to ease carrying water into the field.
