The Yellowstone Coach Company, of Wakarusa, Indiana, started manufacturing camp trailers in the 1940s. The Yellowstone camp trailers were small, but they also held all the amenities necessary for a comfortable life on the road. The original company no longer makes trailers, but the Gulfstream company still manufactures a line of luxury campers called Yellowstone.

Unique Appearance

Yellowstone camping trailers featured a distinctive, silver corrugated aluminum exterior. The popular 23-foot model had a separate bedroom in the rear of the coach and a full bathroom.

Sleeping Arrangements

Folks who ordered a larger model with a separate bedroom could choose twin beds or an optional, "Hollywood" double bed on a metal frame. Smaller models had a fold-down sofa for seating and sleeping.

Optional Equipment

By 1960, the company built 16-foot, 19-foot, 24-foot and 27-foot camping trailers with a variety of floor plans. All had birch interior woodwork, a gas range and oven, and freshwater tank and pump. Options included gas refrigerator, shower and hot water tank, and toilet with black-water storage.

Yellowstone Motor Homes

The original Yellowstone Coach Company no longer manufactures camping trailers. However, Gulf Stream Coach makes a line of modern luxury motor homes called Yellowstone. These offer campers the comfort of air conditioning, shade awnings, sound systems, flat-screen televisions, reclining lounge chairs, king-size beds and microwave ovens in the kitchen.

Vintage Camper Enthusiasts

The original Yellowstone camping trailers are popular with classic camp trailer enthusiasts, who buy them to restore and refurbish, or because they just enjoy camping in the unique trailers.
