Electronics let you call for help, help you navigate and take pictures during your hiking trips. Unfortunately, a dead battery can leave you stranded or without a way to call for help. Solar chargers offer a solution.

Design

Compact solar cells open to capture energy from the sun. Weighing only a few ounces, these solar chargers pack easily with your hiking gear.

Use

You can recharge cellphones, digital cameras, GPS units and other electronics that connect through a USB port.

Charge Time

A solar charger takes at least eight hours in direct sun to completely fill the internal battery that can transfer charge time to your electronics.

Manufacturers

Solio and Powerfilm both make solar chargers suitable for hiking and backpacking.

Price

As of May 2010, prices start at $70 for a basic model and $150 for a charger with more features and higher-quality materials.
