Geography
Smith Mountain Lake and its state park are situated in southwestern Virginia. The park is about 35 miles from Roanoke and about 155 miles from Richmond.
Size
State Mountain Lake State Park encloses 1,248 acres, not including any of the surface area of the lake.
Accommodations
Accommodations at the state park consist of two- and three-bedroom rental cabins and the campground. Both tent- and RV-camping are available. All campsites have picnic tables, lantern posts and charcoal grills.
Activities
The park has the only public swimming beach on Smith Mountain Lake, a 500-foot wide expanse of sand. There are also 13 miles of hiking trails through pine and hardwood forest, and both shore fishing and boat fishing.
Warning
The northern copperhead, a poisonous and moderately aggressive type of viper, inhabits the woods of Smith Mountain Lake State Park.
