Outdoor Survivalist
People who study or practice how to survive being lost in the wilderness are often referred to as outdoor survivalists. These people learn and perform such skills as firemaking, building shelter, finding food and locating clean potable water.
Return To Safety
An outdoor survivalist is primarily concerned on how to live in the wilderness for a short period of time until he finds his way back to modern society. His main activities might be how to find food, water and shelter, as well as how to navigate his way back to civilization.
Catastrophic Survivalist
Many survivalists are concerned with the breakdown of society after a major catastrophic event that is natural or man-made. These individuals do not see a quick return to normal conditions and so prepare for a long term survival situation.
Major Events
Events of major concern to many survivalists include nuclear war, civil strife, economic breakdown, extreme earthquake or tsunami. Such individuals are known for building shelters and stockpiling supplies and weapons.
Urban Survivalist
According to the Digital Journal, survivalism is not a rural phenomena, for many upscale urban residents are preparing in some way for long-term disasters and also for a possible breakdown of society. Activities for such a person could possibly include stockpiling supplies, learning home first aid and medicine and studying alternative food production.
