The History of the Luxor Hotel
The ancient Egyptian-themed Luxor Hotel, located on the Las Vegas Strip, has 4,407 rooms, with 120,000 square feet of gaming space and several nightclubs. When it first opened, the Luxor was the tallest building on the Las Vegas Strip.

Construction

Circus Circus Enterprises, later Mandalay Resort Group, built the Luxor Hotel, Mandalay Bay and Excalibur. On Oct. 15, 1993, the Luxor opened. The original cost was $375 million. A 1998 upgrade cost $675 million. MGM Mirage bought the Mandalay Resort Group.

River

The Luxor had an indoor river that started as a ferry to take guests from one location to another, which was turned into the Nile River Tour, then got rid of all together in 1995.

Renovation

In 2006, MGM Mirage undertook a major renovation in which it refurnished rooms, added two restaurants and changed the nightclub RA to LAX, a branch of the popular Los Angeles club.

Nightlife

The Blue Man Group performed at the Luxor from 2000 to 2005.

A vehicle exploded in the parking lot and killed a Luxor employee May 7, 2007. Two men were found guilty of the murder in September 2009.
