Summer, from November to March, is the warmest season, with average temperatures between 72 and 100 degrees. January and February typically experience the most rainfall. Autumn has average temperatures ranging from 68 to 86 degrees. Spring has average temperatures between 64 to 91 degrees. Winter is the coldest season, with average temperatures ranging from 46 to 84 degrees.
Surazos
Although the weather is generally warm throughout the year, Bolivia's tropical latitudes are often penetrated by incursions of strong winds from the south, called surazos. Surazos, which blow in from the Argentina pampas, occasionally reach Santa Cruz during the winter and bring intensely cold temperatures for several days. Surazos often cause sudden temperature drops of anywhere from 10 to 40 degrees overnight. While Surazos occur mostly from May to June, the windiest month in Santa Cruz is usually August. August winds, however, are not as cold.
Humidity
Summer days are usually very hot and sticky. Between late August and May, the humidity is usually at its worst with the winds blowing very warm and muggy air throughout the region. December and January are the hottest months of the year but not always the most humid. Nights in Santa Cruz are often warm, with the winds carrying the fruity aroma of the jungle.
Camping
Santa Cruz offers an array of camping options, including hiking, rafting, kayaking, canoeing, paragliding and mountain biking. There are national parks, reserves and navigable rivers where it is possible for fishing and different aquatic sports. Campers can also organize special safaris or expeditions through the Amazonia.
Population
Santa Cruz is located in the eastern lowlands of the country and is northeast of the Bolivian Andes. It has the highest population (1,545,161 as of 2008) in the country and a population density of 10,917 people per square mile.
