Japan Car Rentals

Japan Car Rentals
Scuba diving, hiking, skiing are examples of activities visitors to Japan enjoy, in addition to cultural sightseeing and shopping. If you wish to explore Japan by car, renting a car is an option.

Orientation

Japan's large metropolitan areas have efficient public transportation systems and many residents rely on buses and trains for their commute and travel between cities. In rural Japan, however, cars are essential.

Requirements

To rent a car in Japan, a Japanese driver license or an international driving permit is required. The international driver permit must be obtained in your home country before you arrive in Japan and is good for one year. The minimum driving age in Japan is 18.

Types of Vehicles

Cars in all sizes, from sub-compact to standard, as well as large vans, buses and RVs are available for rent.

Rental Car Agencies

Car rental companies are available in most urban areas, as well as airports and major train stations.

Terms and Costs

Car rental rates are for 24 hour increments with unlimited mileage. As of 2009, daily car rental rates range from 6000 yen to 16,000 yen depending on hired car size. Rates do not include fuel costs or expressway tolls, but they do include a 1000 yen mandatory insurance fee.

Considerations

Driving in metropolitan areas in Japan is not recommended because of heavy traffic and high parking fees.
