The Outer Banks Islands are known for being one of the least expensive, yet most beautiful beaches in the United States. The Outer Banks is a 130-mile string of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, and is filled with unique history and a number of family activities, great restaurants and an active nightlife.

Regions and Cities

The Outer Banks island is divided into three sections: the Northern Beaches, which contain the cities of Duck, Southern Shore, Kitty Halk and Kill Devil Hills; Hatteras Island, which consists of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras; and Roanoke Island, where you will find the cities of Mancheo and Wanchese.

Accommodations

There are many different accommodation types in the Outer Banks that will fit any budget. Places to stay in the Outer Banks include rental homes, cottages, hotels and motels, bed and breakfasts, inns and campgrounds.

Wright Brothers National Memorial

A major tourist attraction in the Outer Banks is the Wright Brothers National Memorial, located in Kill Devil Hills. This is where the first controlled powered flight took off on December 17, 1903.

Attractions

There are five historical lighthouses on the Outer Banks islands: Bodie Island Lighthouse, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Currituck Beach Lighthouse, Ocracoke Lighthouse and The Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse. Of these, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the nation that is open for climbing.

History

The Outer Banks' Roanoke Island is home to the first English settlement in America, which today is called the Lost Colony because of the its mysterious disappearance. The Outer Banks hosts a theatrical production of the events leading up to the colony's disappearance, performed near the site of the real Lost Colony.
