Information on Atka Volcano in Alaska

Information on Atka Volcano in Alaska
Atka volcano is what is called a shield volcano, with a flattened summit because of a past eruption or collapsed exterior walls. The inactivity of ancient Atka itself does not mean there has not been volcanic activity taking place. The caldera of Atka is rimmed by seven or eight stratovolcanoes, four of which are major stratovolcanoes.

History

According to John Seach with volcanolive.com, Atka erupted about 300,000 to 500,000 years ago, flattening the cone and forming a caldera, satellite vents and stratovolcanoes.

Geography

The island of Atka is centrally located in the Aleutian Island chain, about 1,087 miles southwest of Anchorage, Alaska.

Size

Atka volcano rises 5,030 feet above sea level. This volcano, its side vents and associated stratovolcanoes is the largest volcanic system in that region.

Potential

Atka volcano likely will not have a major eruption again, but Korovin, one of the stratovolcanoes formed on Atka's rim, has been historically very active. Atka released small amounts of ash or steam in 1986, 1998, 2005 and 2006.

Fun Fact

Before the cinder cone collapsed and formed the caldera, Atka's summit might have once towered approximately 7,218 feet.
