History of Ski Lifts in New Hampshire

New Hampshire is essentially where the first ski lifts in the U.S. opened. The first resort-based ski school in the country was opened in Sugar Hill, in 1929.

J-bar Invented

The J-bar, which the T-bar was later derived from, was invented in 1929 by the Dartmouth Outing Club, in Hanover, N.H. This is considered the first overhead cable ski lift. This is the same year that the first ski train ran from Boston to Warner, N.H.

First Chairlift in East

In 1937, the first chairlift in the eastern U.S. was installed in Belknap, N.H.

First Aerial Tramway

In 1938, the first aerial tramway in the U.S. was installed at Cannon Mountain, in Franconia, N.H.

First Gondola Lift

In 1958, the first gondola lift was installed in the U.S. at Wildcat mountain in what is now Pinkham Notch, N.H.

Ski Areas Today

As of 2010, there are 19 alpine skiing areas with lifts in N.H.
