Although Costa Rica is only 19,563 square miles (smaller than West Virginia), the weather varies by region due to differences in elevation. In general, the country has two seasons, dry and rainy.

Dry Season

In most regions the dry season runs December to April. In the Northern Lowlands and Arenal Volcano area, the dry season is from April to November. In Monteverde it occurs January to May, and February, March, September and October in the North and South Caribbean areas.

Rainy Season

The rainy season runs December to March in the Northern Lowlands and Arenal Volcano area; from June to September in Monteverde; and November to January and April to August in the North and South Caribbean regions. In all other regions the rainy season occurs May to November.

Sunshine

Costa Rica typically sees more than 12 hours of sunshine a day, with the sun rising at approximately 5 a.m. and setting at about 6 p.m. throughout the year.

Temperature

The country's average annual temperature is around 70 to 81 degrees F.

Humidity

At 84 percent, March and April tend to be the least humid months, while other months average 87 to 90 percent. Trade winds help buffer the high humidity.
