International Airports
The city of Los Angeles owns two international airports. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is west of the city and is the third busiest airport in the United States. LA/Ontario International Airport (ONT) is east of the city and was used by 6.2 million passengers in 2008.
Domestic Commercial Service Airports
Four additional airports serve major airline domestic traffic. Bob Hope Airport (BUR) is located northeast of the city in Burbank, John Wayne Airport (SNA) is located southeast of the city in Santa Ana, Long Beach Airport (LGB) is located south of the city in Long Beach, and LA/Palmdale Regional Airport (PMD) is located north of the city in Palmdale.
General Aviation Airports
Fourteen towered general aviation airports, and nine non-towered general aviation airports, are located throughout the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The Van Nuys Airport (VNY) in the San Fernando Valley is the busiest general aviation airport in the world.
Military Airfields
The Los Angeles area is home to five military airfields: Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles, Los Alamitos Army Airfield in Orange County, March Joint Air Reserve Base in Riverside County, Naval Air Station Point Mugu in Ventura County, and U.S. Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale.
Los Angeles Air Route Traffic Control Center
The Los Angeles Air Route Traffic Control Center (ZLA) located in Palmdale controls air traffic over non-military airspace in southern and central California, southern Nevada, southwestern Utah and western Arizona.
