Considerations
Factors to consider when deciding how much to tip include the size of the room, the number of people staying in the room and the condition in which you leave the room. You should also consider the quality of the the maid's work.
Types
The type of hotel you're staying at is also a factor in how much to tip. Generally, the larger and more plush the hotel, the larger the tip should be.
Location
Know where to leave the tip. If possible, hand it to the maid. Or you can put the money in a labeled envelope and leave it in a conspicuous place in the room. Maids are trained to not take anything from a room, so leaving cash in the open may cause some hesitation.
Amount
As a rule of thumb, you should tip from $1 to $5 per night of your stay. If the service was exceptional, leave a bit more.
Misconceptions
Although tipping hotel maids is a common courtesy, you're not obligated to leave a tip. If the maid didn't replace all the towels, make the beds neatly or didn't clean the sink, don't feel guilty about not leaving a tip.
