History
The town of Homer was settled in the late 1800's by coal and gold miners. Though there was little success in mining, Homer found economic success through fishing and tourism and now over 4,000 people reside in the community.
Wildlife
The Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, the largest wildlife refuge in Alaska, is located in Homer. Take a water taxi and enjoy breathtaking views of the mountains, glaciers and wildlife in Kachemak Bay.
Winter Sports
Winter sports in Homer include sled dog adventures and nordic skiing. Ice hockey and skating are offered at two different rinks in Homer. For those who enjoy fishing year round, salmon trolling and ice fishing activities are available.
Guided Tours
Guided tours and floral and fauna hikes of the Homer's public trail system are offered by the Kachemak Heritage Trust. Educational tours of the marine and ecosystem in the area are coordinated through the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies.
Water Sports
For those who gravitate towards water sports, rent a kayak for the day and explore the waters of Kachemak Bay or Halibut Cove, but before you leave check forecast and tide information.
