Las Posadas
Throughout Mexico, Christmas celebrations start with Las Posadas, nine days of candlelight-led parades and lively parties, beginning on December 16 and leading up to Christmas.
Las Pastorelas
Las Pastorelas, or shepherd plays, are light, humorous plays performed throughout December by amateurs and professionals. They tell the story of the shepherds' trip to Bethlehem and the Devil's attempts to confound them through a series of misadventures.
Poinsettias
Poinsettias appear in U.S. supermarkets and florist's shops throughout December, but many Mexicans have another use for the brightly colored flower. They use the plant to produce a rich, dark beer available only during the holiday season.
Christmas Eve
Christmas Eve is celebrated with a Mass service, after which families gather for a traditional Christmas dinner, which may include roast turkey or ham, tamales and hot fruit punch. Gifts are opened in the evening, and children may light sparklers or take turns swiping at piñatas.
Christmas Day
On Christmas Day, no special activities or processions take place. Most Mexicans enjoy the day by relaxing, spending time with their families and eating leftovers.
