A U.S. citizen who'll be vacationing in Thailand for less than 30 days is not required to have a visa.
Long-term Vacation (over 30 days)
Apply for a tourist visa if you're a U.S. and plan to vacation in Thailand for more than 30 days. You can get more information or download a visa here: http://www.mfa.go.th/web/2637.php, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kingdom of Thailand's official Web site.
Extra Visa Pages
Ensure you have several pages available in your visa for stamps required upon entry and departure from Thailand.
Transit Visa
Check with your airline in case you'll be flying into other countries en route to Thailand to ensure you have a separate transit visa if necessary. You'll have to refer to that country's visa requirements to determine if a transit visa is necessary.
Additional Types of Visas
Check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kingdom of Thailand's website, http://www.mfa.go.th/web/2637.php, if you'd like further information about other types of visas, including those for business or extended stays.
