Eagle Village is a tiny community on the eastern side of Alaska, steeped in native culture. Already struggling economically, Eagle Village was devastated by the Eagle floods in the spring of 2009.

Location

Eagle Village sits on the west side of the Yukon River, on the far eastern side of Alaska, near the Canadian border. Eagle Village is just 3 miles to the southeast of Eagle, Alaska.

Population

Eagle Village is a very small town with an estimated population of only 60 to 70 people. The largest percentage of those employed work for the local and state government in construction.

Culture

Han Athabascan Indians were the original residents, with miners and trappers moving there in the mid-1800s. About half of the current population are associated with the native tribe, the Native Village of Eagle.

Weather

The area experiences harsh winters, often enduring ice fog, but it has mild summers.

Eagle Flood

In the spring of 2009, unseasonably warm weather melted excess ice in the Yukon River, flooding areas around the river, including Eagle Village. Many local homes and buildings were destroyed.
