Airplane flights departing from one country and landing in another have additional rules and regulations than domestic flights. Understand all international flight policies to ensure smooth travels.

Documentation

Passports are required when flying internationally. In addition, some countries require additional visas or paperwork for legal entry into a foreign country. Passports are required for all passengers regardless of age.

Luggage

Most airlines permit two checked bags as well as one carry-on item for international flights. Checked bags should not exceed 62 inches in perimeter and weigh more than 50 lbs. Passengers may be charged additional fees if luggage is over size and weight regulations.

Prohibited Items

Do not travel with dangerous or flammable items. All liquids must be transported in 3 oz. or less travel size containers and packaged in a clear zipped baggie. Items such as nail files, explosive items or highly flammable items should not be packed.

Flights Entering U.S.

Flights entering the U.S. from a foreign country require all passengers to remain seated the last hour of the flight. No items are permitted to be held in traveler's laps. This rule went into effect Dec. 2009.

Wait Time

Be sure to arrive at the airport early before an international flight. Arrive two hours before take off for plenty of time at customs and all security checkpoints. Many international flights require passengers to board no later than 30 minutes before departure. Be prepared at the departure gate to hear announcements concerning boarding procedures. Many airports have two security screening areas for international flights--once upon entering the secure zone and again prior to boarding the plane.
