The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) protects the United States transportation system, including air travel. As of February 2010, these air travel rules apply to all flights leaving the United States; identification rules also apply to incoming flights.

Prohibited Carry-On Items

Items prohibited from carry-on luggage include sharp objects including box cutters, knives and scissors as well as sporting goods such as bats, golf clubs and ski poles. Guns, firearms, and a variety of other tools are also banned.

Prohibited Checked Luggage Items

Explosive materials or flammable items, except for lighters without fuel, are not permitted in checked luggage. This list includes fireworks, dynamite, hand grenades, flammable paints and strike-anywhere matches.

International Flight Rules

Individuals who hold a passport issued by nations sponsoring terrorism or other countries of interest require enhanced screening. This new rule applies to passengers flying into the United States from anywhere in the world.

Liquid Rules

Passengers may carry bottles filled with liquid as long as each bottle weighs
3.4 ounces or less with all bottles fitting inside one quart-sized clear, plastic bag. Larger size liquids should be placed in checked luggage.

Acceptable Identification

For travel in the United States, passengers must show a United States federal or state-issued photo ID in order to get through checkpoints. The document must show name, date of birth, gender, expiration date and a tamper-resistant feature.
