US Airways Carry-On Bag Regulations

US Airways Carry-On Bag Regulations
Like most other carriers, US Airways now charges for every bag you check, which means more and more people are carrying their bags onto the plane. But there are certain rules for getting that bag through security. For the outdoor enthusiast, that might mean more checked luggage.

Carry-on Bag

US Airways only allows one carry-on bag per passenger. The carry-on should weigh no more than 40 lbs. and be no larger than 45 inches or 115 cm, with dimensions no larger than 14 x 9 x 22 inches or 36 x 23 x 56 cm.

Personal Item

In addition to the carry-on bag, passengers on US Airways are allowed to carry one personal item. A personal item can be something like a purse, briefcase or backpack. But it cannot be a second piece of luggage.

TSA Screening

Keep in mind that any bag you intend to carry on a US Airways flight will be screened by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). As of 2006, the TSA only allows a limited amount of liquids in your carry-on. According to the rules, all liquids must be under 3.4 ounces (100ml); must fit inside 1-quart-size, zip-top, clear, plastic bag; and must be removed from your bag during the screening process. Additionally, any laptop you plan to carry on must be removed from your baggage, unless you are carrying it inside a "checkpoint friendly" laptop bag.

Checked Baggage Fees

As of February 1, 2010, the fee to check a bag at the airport starts at $25 for the first bag, $35 for the second bag and $100 for the third. Passengers heading to South America, Europe or the Middle East won't pay for the first bag; passengers to South America and the Middle East also won't have to pay for the second bag.

Oversize Baggage Fees

Many outdoor enthusiasts will also want to take along their skis, snowboards, surfboards or bikes, and on US Airways that's going to cost you even more. There are additional fees for coach and economy passengers whose bags weigh more than 50 lbs. And there are fees if your bag is longer than 62 inches. US Airways will not accept bags larger than 80 inches.
