Shoulder Problems
Shoulder issues are common among children. Not only are heavy backpacks to blame, how the backpack is carried is also an issue. Backpacks should have their weight distributed evenly, and both shoulder straps and waist straps should be used at all times.
Back Problems
Back problems are often a result of a heavy load in the backpack. Because of the strain placed on the lower and upper back, many small children are at risk for permanent disc or muscle damage.
Fatigue
Many children who walk significant distances with their backpacks may develop fatigue. This is due to the increased physical stress the backpack may be placing on the skeletal muscles and the heart.
Posture
Many children who use heavy backpacks also develop poor posture. This is the body's natural response to trauma or having a heavy load being placed on it. This can have permanent effects of slouching or walking with an abnormal gait due to the position of the spine.
Muscle Problems
Muscle problems are common in the upper body of a child using a heavy backpack. Overuse of the upper body in combination with added weight may lead to generalized muscle weakness or muscle spasms. There is also an increased risk of torn muscles, muscle strain and pain in the shoulders and upper back.
