The History of Ecotourism

The History of Ecotourism
Ecotourism started in the 1980s in response to people who wanted to learn about and experience different countries' environments and cultures.

Awareness

Ecotourism began when people started to become conscious about their environment. Charles Darwin is associated with being one of the first people to discuss ecotourism because of his awareness of the environment.

Expansion

In 2002, the United Nations declared it the Year of Ecotourism. Since 2002, ecotourism has expanded to the Caribbean reefs as well as the Amazon rain forests.

Positive Role Model

Costa Rica is an ideal ecotourism destination, because it has changed from being the leader in deforestation to being a good example and influence on ecotourism.

Continued Growth

Ecotourism continues to grow as more people learn about the environment and the importance of preserving natural resources.

Importance

Ecotourism is important because it allows people to learn about being good stewards of our fragile planet.
