Carry-On Bags
Carry-on bags can be no more than 45 inches total when you add the length, width and height. Your day pack should fit the bill, but your external frame, multi-day backpack is probably a no-go.
Checked Bags
To avoid additional fees, domestic luggage must be 50 pounds or less. Some checked items are deemed "special" and might incur extra fees. Over-sized equipment, like skis and climbing portaledges, fall into this category.
Liquids
The liquids in your carry-on bag must follow TSA's 3-1-1 rule: all containers must be 3 ounces or smaller, the containers must be in a 1-quart zip-top bag, and each traveler can carry only one zip-top bag. Your camp soap and sunscreen may need to be transferred to smaller bottles.
Banned in Carry-On Bags
Some outdoor gear, like ice axes, utility knives and ski poles, are acceptable in checked luggage but not allowed in your carry-on bags.
Banned in Checked Bags
Outdoor items such as emergency flares and cooking fuels are not allowed at all. Common lighters and safety matches are acceptable in carry-on luggage but cannot be checked.
Identification
Passengers 18 and older must show a US federal or state-issued photo ID, like a passport, military ID or driver's license, to get through the airport security checkpoint.
