New York Taxi Information

New York Taxi Information
Taxis in the New York metro area are driven by well-informed drivers who know the geography well and will take you to any destination in NYC, Westchester County and Nassau County as well as Newark Airport. Whether hailing a cab spontaneously on the street or planning and calling ahead, the taxi is the most convenient way of transportation, leaving the outdoor enthusiast more time to enjoy the vast recreational resources New York has to offer.

Identifying an Authorized Taxi

Each authorized car needs to have stickers on the outside of the car listing the base name, base license number and base telephone number. Also, on the inside of the car, the driver's license should be clearly visible behind the driver's seat.

Occupancy Limit

In each taxi, the maximum number of passengers is four in a four-passenger car and five in a five-passenger car. Children under the age of 7 are allowed as additional passengers if securely seated on the lap of an adult in the back seat.

Multistop Limit

A taxi driver must agree to driving the passengers to as many stops as they require; however the meter is kept running the entire trip and does not start and stop.

Meter Rate

After a passenger's ride begins, the driver will turn on the meter to keep track of how much will be owed. This meter is visible to the passenger. There is a standard fare of $2.50 and an additional 40-cent charge for each one-fifth of a mile or 60 seconds while not in motion as well as a 50-cent night surcharge after 8 p.m. and before 6 a.m. Going to certain locations has a flat fee, which is clearly listed in the cabs and updated frequently. Passengers are able to use credit ad debit cards in every cab.

Hailing a Taxi

There is a light on the roof of each taxi, which makes it easy to tell whether the car is empty or already has a passenger. If the light is lit, the cab is currently empty and you can obtain a ride from it. When a driver accepts a passenger, he turns the light off, indicating that his cab is currently in use.
