Geography
The Great Plains of Texas occupies most of northern and central Texas. The panhandle is known as the High Plains, and the lower region is known as the Edwards Plateau and the Central Texas section of the Great Plains.
Summer
Summer weather can get hot in the Great Plains when temperatures average in the lower 90s to mid-90 degrees Fahrenheit throughout June to August. In the evening, temperatures dip to an average of 61 to 65 degrees.
Fall
A dramatic drop occurs in the fall, as temperatures average in the mid-80s in September. However, the temperature drops to an average of 63 by November (see Reference 2).
Winter
Although temperatures usually range from 50 to 60 degrees in the winter, the Texas Great Plains also get a fair amount of winter weather. Strong cold fronts moving from the Rocky Mountains push the cold air into Texas, causing sleet, ice and snow (see References 2 and 3).
Spring
With the arrival of spring comes more tolerable temperatures. The weather starts an upward trend, averaging anywhere from the upper 60s to the lower 80s.
