Utrecht Car Rentals

Utrecht Car Rentals
Utrecht is the capital of the Dutch province that holds the same name. It is a city of canals, museums, shops and Dom Tower, which you can climb the 465 steps to its top for sweeping views of the city. If you want to rent a car in Utrecht, you have options.

Requirements

Unless your driver's license is issued by a member of the European Union, Liechtenstein, Iceland or Norway, you are advised to get an international driving permit. The minimum age to rent a car in Utrecht varies per company, but it's usually 21 to 23.

Types of Cars

You have a choice from compact to luxury cars. You can also choose manual or automatic transmission, with higher rates for the latter.

Car Rental Companies

You have a choice among renting directly from a car rental agency such as Europcar and Sixt or hiring a car through a discount company such as Kemwel.

Terms and Rates

Daily and weekly rates are available. Rates generally include unlimited mileage, taxes and some insurance. As of 2009, daily rates started at about $65. Rates do not include fuel costs, and additional insurance might be necessary.

Possible Drives

From Utrecht, historic Oudewater is 11 miles southwest, Zeist is six miles to the east and medieval Amersfoort is 12 miles northeast of Utrecht. A longer drive to Amsterdam is also possible.

Considerations

Utrecht is very well serviced and connected by a reliable public transportation system; driving is not essential.
