Homeland Security Rules for Air Travel

Homeland Security Rules for Air Travel
The United States Department of Homeland Security, in cooperation with the Transportation Security Administration, has a system of rules in place for air travelers. These security measures mainly apply to baggage--carry-on baggage in particular--and passenger entry into the airport terminal.

Terminal Entry

Only ticketed passengers are allowed in an airport terminal. Passengers must present a valid picture I.D. with their boarding pass to pass through airport security.

Valid Identification

Valid picture identification can include a U.S. or Canadian issued driver's license, a permanent resident card, a passport or passport card, a Trusted Traveler card such as NEXUS, FAST or SENTRI or an American military I.D.

Liquids

Liquids in luggage are limited to three-ounce bottles and no more than three bottles per passenger. These bottles must be sealed in a quart-size plastic zipper bag.

Restricted Items

Sharp objects such as scissors, box cutters and ice picks can only be stored in checked luggage, not carry-on. The same applies for blunt, stick-like sporting goods such as baseball bats and golf clubs and any type of firearms.

Passenger Entry

Passengers must remove shoes and all metal objects from their person before passing though airport security. These must all be scanned through the X-ray machine.
