What is Banding?
Banding is noise in a digital image that manifests as patterns of vertical lines. The lines can also appear horizontal, depending on the camera's orientation at the time of image capture.
Types
Long banding is seen throughout the entirety of the image, whereas short banding only appears as short lines, often in sections of extreme contrast within an image.
Considerations
Banding can drastically reduce the quality of a photo. Digital images will often show banding when they are enlarged on a computer screen or in print.
Causes
Banding noise can be more visible when talking photos at high ISO speeds (low-light situations), in shadows, and with certain white balance settings. According to Nikon, B\banding is highly dependent on camera type, and some earlier SLR models had more banding problems than newer models have.
Prevention/Solution
Contact the camera manufacturer if youhave a banding problem. The manufacturer may have solutions specific to your digital SLR camera.
