Airline Luggage Rules

Airline Luggage Rules
If you are taking a ski trip or any other excursion requiring a flight, be aware that the once-friendly skies may not seem so friendly anymore. Airlines have new rules and fees regarding checked baggage. Before you fly, or book that flight, be aware of who is charging what.

Checked Bags

With the exception of Southwest, all U.S. airlines now charge for checked bags. JetBlue allows one bag to be checked free. All other domestic airlines charge between $15 and $50 for checked bags.

Dimensions

Each airline has different rules for baggage dimensions. Oversized bags get charged extra. Delta, for example, charges $175 for bags measuring 63 to 80 inches. Keep this in mind when booking ski trips and take into account the length of your ski bags. Delta will not take any bag over 80 inches.

Weight

Fifty lbs. seems to be the industry standard for acceptable baggage weight. Bags over 50 lbs. will be charged extra. Northwest charges $90 for bags weighing between 51 and 70 lbs., and $175 for bags between 71 and 100 lbs. Each airline has different fees. Check the resource section below for links to complete rules and regulations.

First-Class and Business Class Exemptions

Most domestic airlines waive excess baggage fees for their first-class and business cabin travelers. United Airways exempts first- and business class travelers, Global ServicesSM, Mileage Plus 1K, Premier Executive, Premier, Premier Associate, or Star Alliance Gold or Silver members and active-duty military personnel (and/or dependents) with ID and traveling on orders.

Carry-Ons

Each airline allows at least one carry-on per passenger. Dimensions vary from airline to airline, and some allow one carry-on and one personal handbag or laptop bag. Check the resource section for links to airlines rules.
