Air Travel Requirements

Air Travel Requirements
While planning for a vacation or outdoor expedition that has you travel by airplane, keep in mind the laws and regulations of the Transportation Security Administration. Airplanes transport more than 600 million passengers every year, requiring the TSA to maintain tight security requirements for the safety of its passengers.

Identification

Travel with an official passport or similar government-issued form of photo identification, including Trusted Traveler cards such as NEXUS or SENTRI.

Packing Recommendations

Organize the items in carry-on daypacks and checked luggage such as frame packs used for backpacking. TSA officials use X-ray machines to determine that carry-on bags do not contain prohibited items, and unorganized bags can delay their job.

Footwear

Keep hiking boots in checked luggage. The TSA suggests wearing slip-on shoes during the security screening to cut down on the time needed to unlace and lace shoes.

Liquids

Refer to the TSA's 3-1-1 rule for restrictions on liquid items in carry-on bags. Wait until after the security check before filling a Nalgene water bottle, or just purchase water from a gift shop.

Prohibited Items

Sports enthusiasts, hunters and martial artists should keep their equipment in checked luggage. The TSA bans firearms and ammunition, including paintball markers and pellet guns, from carry-on baggage.
