Information About Visas for Visiting Australia
Australia is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes, hikers dream of exploring the outback, divers covet the world-famous Great Barrier Reef and Sydney's Bondi Beach is a surfer's paradise. All foreign visitors to Australia need a visa before they can hit the great outdoors. Short-term visitor visas are easy to obtain, while long-term travel or work and holiday visas require a more complicated application process.

Short-Term Travel

U.S. passport holders who plan to visit Australia for less than 90 days can apply for an ETA (Visitor) visa. ETA visitors are valid for 12 months from the date of issue.

Applying for an ETA Visa

All you'll need to apply for an ETA is your passport number. Visas can be obtained from your travel agent, Australian visa office, or online through the eta.immi.gov.au website. The service fee is $20.

Long-Term Travel

Travelers planning to visit Australia for more than 90 days must apply for a Tourist Visa (Subclass 676).

Work and Holiday

U.S. passport holders between 18 and 30 years of age can apply for a Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462.) This visa allows you to supplement travel with casual employment in Australia for up to 12 months.

Applying for a Long-Term Travel or Work and Holiday Visa

You'll need your passport, a copy of your birth certificate, proof of sufficient funding and evidence supporting your intent to return home (for example, a letter from your employer.) Application forms are available on the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship website, www.immi.gov.au.
